Kaliningrad has land borders with Poland in the south and Lithuania in the north and the east. The town lies on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea; it is the most westward region of Russia. Formerly called Königsberg, it was the capital of Eastern Prussia and only in 1946 became a part of Russia. Until 1991 Kaliningrad region was closed for foreigners. Numerous historical monuments, beautiful landscapes of the Baltic coast, the Curonian Spit and dunes, make this region very attractive for guests. This area used to be home to many famous scientists and artists. Perhaps the most known of them is Immanuel Kant, one of the greatest philosophers, who worked at Königsberg University and was buried at the walls of the Cathedral. The city has several excellent history museums, many old churches, fortresses and the splendid old Gothic Cathedral.
